Melissa’s stomach was one big knot that kept twisting tighter as the day wore on. Even though Mitch said he didn’t want anyone knowing about their spending time together, she had to admit she’d been surprised, and relieved, when he’d come down to breakfast and treated her exactly as he always had. Which meant he’d teased her, stepped into her personal space, and generally made it impossible to ignore him.

To look at him, at his casual demeanor, no one would be the wiser. Lord, how she wished she had his ability to hide her feelings! But she only had to look at him to remember the way he’d held her hand, caressed her face. Kissed her. Not that she needed to look at him to remember any of that. It was always right there, at the forefront of her mind. It was just worse when she looked at him. When she did, her cheeks burned, a smile tugged at her lips despite how she tried to hold it back. It was a wonder none of the other guests had noticed. Of course, it had helped that Mitch had eaten quicker than usual and left soon after.

His absence should have eased her nerves. It hadn’t.

“I don’t know. All I know is that I don’t think I’ve ever heard one person sigh so many times in a day.” He pointed to the counter where she was working. “Are you having troubles? Do you need help?”

“No, everything is fine.” But she set her scissors down, stepped back from the counter. “I think I just need some air.”

Then, because they were finished and she wanted to go out with a better excuse than needing air, Melissa picked Silver’s shoes off the counter.

“You can’t go to the saloon! That’s no place for a respectable woman.”

Melissa struggled not to roll her eyes. It was early afternoon on a Wednesday and the saloon had yet to open. How much damage could it do to walk there? But knowing he meant well, Melissa gave him a reassuring smile.

“The saloon is closed. And I know you don’t want me near Grey’s either which is why I plan on going around back of Silver’s. Hopefully she’ll be in her kitchen and she’ll hear me knock on the back door.”

His brow creased. “How is it you know so much about that woman’s saloon?”

Thinking fast, knowing he’d
